FSCONS: Tools for Determining Net Neutrality – An Activist Perspective

Datum: 15 November 2009 13:00 – 15:00

In the US the issue of net neutrality has been widely debated during the last few years since the Comcast case, where the bittorrent protocol was throttled. Recently there have been reports also in Europe, with the Dutch provider UPC.

However, in terms of user knowledge, traffic analysis requires a lot of competence and even remote servers. This seminar aims at finding solutions to this problem by engaging in building the tools and services required for users to ensure that their networks live up to the expectations as bought by the service providers.

Net neutrality activism can play an important role in building and refining these solutions. For example the Switzerland Network Testing Tool has recently been developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Moreover, by engaging in these issues, we can urge regulatory authorities to also promote these services, such as the FCC in the US and the PTS in Sweden, to give two examples.

This workshop is part of the Julia Group seminar series “Nätvaro”, which is a Swedish expression meaning “being-on-the-(inter)net”.

Participants: Christopher Kullenberg and Jonatan Walck from The Julia Group, Anders Holmström from We Rebuild.EU
Location: Room “von Neumann” @ FSCONS
